2017-12-02

Yezidis (ezdi) - are ethno-confessional group. Their number reaches 1 million. Most are living in their historic homeland in Iraq (region Sheikhan, neighborhoods Dohuk, and in the Sinjar mountains) There is also the community in Syria (governorate Hassaka, Qamishli, Afrin). There are few Yezidis which had remained in Turkey (near Siirt, Mardin, Nisibin, Verashehir ). One of the largest Yezidi community was in the Soviet Union (Armenia and Georgia), after collapsing of which some of them migrated to Russia and Ukraine. Today, the large Yezidi community has also been found in Western Europe.

The native language for the Yezidis is Kurmanji (groupe of Iranian language), on which there is a rich religious poetry that is sacred texts (Kawls and beits), which are the source for the study of religion. Despite the fact that the Yezidis speak Kurmanji, they have formed a separate identity for centuries based on religion. They have developed stereotypical behavior , which differs from the rest of the Kurds, and became a closed community, caste theocratic device, that was historically due to the persecution of followers of radical Yezidism representatives of the dominant religion in the region.

Yezidis manifest their religion, which is called Yezidism, in the scientific literature. The roots of this religion go back to the ancient cults of the Middle East, which were intertwined with the ideas of dervishes, and religion has adopted the final form in the XII century. Yezidis believe in one God (The Khude) and three of his hypostasis Tausi Malak, Ezid, Shikhadi. According to the Yezidi sacred texts, in the XII century, God revealed himself in the face Shikhadi (known preacher Sheikh Adi Musafir).

It is noteworthy that the Yezidis respect all other religions, deference to the prophets of different religions is reflected in their texts. It should be noted that Yezidism is not typical proselytism, ie Yezidi religion can not be taken, the Yezidi have been born.

Details of the Yezidi religion will be available on our portal under the heading "Culture, history, religion."
